PROGRAM EVENTS

Lhabub Duchen
Lord Buddha’s Descent from Tushita Heaven

Buddhists everywhere pray and make offerings to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas on this auspicious day. It is the day when Buddha Shakyamuni himself descended from the Tushita Heaven and prayed to liberate all sentient beings from the sufferings of the six realms. It is said that if we pray and practice on this auspicious day with the right motivation, the benefit of our actions will be far greater than on almost any other day.

Medicine Buddha Puja

The Medicine Buddha practice is extremely powerful and beneficial for the sick and dying as well as for those who have already passed away. It will also help bring deep and profound benefits to those in the healing profession. If you wish to dedicate this puja to your loved ones, please send us the names and photos of your family and friends by email or by mail so that we can include them. We invite all our members to join the puja for the benefit of all beings.

Guru Puja with Tsog Offering

Twice monthly, on the 10th and 25th of the lunar calendar, the practice of Tsog offering is done. It is a commitment for those practicing Highest Yoga Tantra to restore and reaffirm their vows and pledges. Everyone is welcome to attend this ritual of making offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Those participating can bring offerings such as fruits, cookies, flowers and candles.

Tara Puja

Tara embodies all the Buddhas’ enlightened actions of body, speech and mind. She is said to be the liberator, the one who releases us from samsara and the causes of samsara. One special attribute that makes Tara particularly popular is the swiftness with which she responds to those who invoke her. By depending on Tara, we can clear away hindrances to all mundane and spiritual success. Everyone is welcome.

Twelve Links of Dependent Origination

The Twelve Steps of Dependent Origination is the process by which sentient beings cycle in samsara. This teaching is directly related to the teachings His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave in Toronto at the Kalachakra in his detailed commentaries on texts by Nagarjuna and Lama Tsongkhapa. These teachings not only explain how our karma and afflictions drive us into endless cycles within samsara but also how the process can be reversed, enabling us to achieve renunciation and gain liberation from samsara.

Six Preliminary Practices

As listed by Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, the six preliminary practices to a meditation session include: cleaning your mediation room, arranging beautiful offerings, assuming the seven-featured Vairochana sitting position, taking refuge and developing Bodhicitta, petitioning the merit field, offering the seven-limbed prayer and petitioning the Gurus.

Vajrayogini Empowerment

Ven. Dhakpa Tulku Rinpoche has kindly agreed to give the Vajrayogini Empowerment. Vajrayogini (Tibetan: Dorje Naljorma) is a meditation deity of the Anuttarayoga tantra wisdom (Mother) classification. She is the dakini of wisdom and the consort of Chakrasambhara. Vajrayogini is joyful, open and an embodiment of the most profound wisdom at the Dharmakaya level. She carries a knife and a skull cup in her hands and a bone khatwanga on her shoulder.

Prerequisite: A previous Highest Yoga Tantra initiation is required to take this empowerment. These would include Yamantaka, Heruka, Kalachakra and Guhyasamaja.

Commitment: The minimum commitment is the recitation of the Vajrayogini mantra and strong devotion to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

As we expect many of you will wish to attend, we will not be holding this event at the Gyuto Center but have booked a room at the Ramada Hotel in Sunnyvale. We would greatly appreciate you registering for this event so we can plan to accommodate attendees as comfortably as possible.

The Gyuto Center never charges for teachings but relies on individual generosity to make all its teachings available to everyone.

If anyone wishes to sponsor the cost of the Ramada, it is $275 for 1 day and $550 for 2 days. Offerings of lunch for Rinpoche and the monks on Saturday and additional flowers and fruit for the altars are also welcome.

Purification Ceremony

We are very fortunate to have Dhakpa Rinpoche perform a special purification ceremony this year. This will be the first time that Rinpoche has performed these purification ceremonies in public. These prayers are designed especially for those who are not well physically. There are no commitments. Everyone is welcome. Please invite your friends and family.

Long Life Puja

After the purification ceremonies we will offer a Long Life puja for Rinpoche. Dhakpa Tulku Rinpoche will be 78 this year and the students will make a heartfelt request that he have a long and healthy life. At this time we will also formally thank Rinpoche, a great master and practitioner of the Dharma, and ask that he return to the Gyuto Center in San Jose next year.

We hope you will all come and wish Rinpoche a long life! This will be a potluck party.

Pilgrimage to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas
Organized by the Gyuto Vajrayana Center, San Jose

Buddha has said that: “Every living being has the potential to become a Buddha if they completely purify their minds of all faults and limitations.” We can be inspired to accomplish this goal by visiting holy places and meditating on the teachings of the Buddha. The Gyuto Center is sponsoring a pilgrimage to the Sagely City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Ukiah. Established by the great Chinese master, Hsuan Hua in 1976, the City’s goal is to bring the Dharma to all people from every corner of the world. Master Hua also set up the Dharma Realm Buddhist University from which many monks and nuns have graduated and have left to teach the Dharma throughout the world. Dhakpa Tulku Rinpoche will lead prayers to the Ten Thousand Buddhas and dedicate the merit accumulated for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Everyone is invited to join this pilgrimage. This is an extraordinary opportunity to visit a unique place of pilgrimage with Rinpoche before he leaves for India.

We will be picking up people by bus at locations to be announced closer to the event. The fee for the bus trip is $35.00 per person. In order to reserve buses for the trip your seat will not be confirmed until we receive your payment. The final date for reservation is November 16.

Bodhicitta and Dedication Ceremony

In every tradition, at the end of a program of teachings, the lamas and the students dedicate all of the merit received from the teachings. If we don’t dedicate our merit and then commit negative actions, our merit is diminished or lost. However this does not happen if we have dedicated it to the welfare of all beings.

On this day everyone should bring one small item that is symbolic of their merit such as a flower, candle, khata (scarf), mala (rosary), etc. to hold in their hands during the ceremony and then to offer to our Guru, Dhakpa Tulku Rinpoche. Rinpoche will then dedicate all of our merit to the Buddha Maitreya (the Buddha of the future) on behalf of all of the students. This is our last program with Rinpoche and is a very important event.

Farewell lunch for Dhakpa Tulku Rinpoche

After the ceremony students are invited to join a potluck lunch with Rinpoche.

Dhakpa Tulku Rinpoche leaves for India

Rinpoche will leave for India on the 9:00 PM flight from SFO. Everyone is invited to come to the SFO Airport and wish Rinpoche a safe flight. Rinpoche will leave the Center at 8.00 pm

Message from Ven. Lobsang Dorjee Rinpoche

Ven. Lobsang Dorjee Rinpoche, former abbot of Gyuto Monastery visited the Center, between December and June this year. We were very fortunate to have such lama in residence at the Gyuto Center. During his visit he gave many precious teachings both of sutra and tantra. Rinpoche mentioned before he left that he wished that the members would put whatever they learned during his stay into sincere practice. He encouraged students to do their very best to keep their commitments even in the midst of their busy daily lives. Rinpoche said he would see everyone again in the next few years. Rinpoche is currently teaching at Drepung Monastery in South India.
