confer great benefit. The Gyuto monks will lead
us in the Medicine Buddha puja to help those who are suffering from ill health or
other personal difficulties. The Medicine Buddha practice is extremely powerful
and beneficial for the sick and the dying, as well as for those who have already
passed away. If you wish to dedicate this puja to your loved ones, please send us
their names and photos by mail or email info@gyutocenter.org so that we can include them.
Green Tara Mantra Recitation
Monday Jan. 10
7 pm - 9 pm
Green Tara is the savior who is compassionate, wise, and quick-acting. If one needs
Tara and recites her mantra it is said that Tara will swiftly come to one's aid.
Results of the Green Tara meditation and mantra recitation are quick-thinking, wisdom,
generosity and fearlessness. Tara is usually depicted with her right leg extended,
ready to spring into action, while her left leg is folded in the contemplative position,
symbolizing both wisdom and compassion. Tara is primarily thought of in three different
ways: as a Bodhisattva, a Protector, and as a Buddha. In this session we will be
reciting the mantra of the Green Tara.
Guru Puja Practice Class
Sunday Jan. 16
10 am - 12 pm
In this special class we will receive instruction on many facets of the precious Guru
puja. We will learn the chant tune and use of the ritual implements, including the
vajra, bell and damaru. Execution of the hand mudras will also be explained. It is
the Gyuto monks’ hope that with this instruction, members will be able to do the Guru
puja at home and to eventually even learn to lead this very important puja. If you
have a bell, vajra or damaru, please bring them to the class.
Guru Puja (Tsog Offering)
Wednesday Jan. 19

Twice monthly, according to the lunar calendar, the important practice of Guru puja
with Tsog offering is done. It is a commitment for those practicing Highest Yoga
Tantra and restores vows and pledges. Everyone is welcome to attend this ritual of
offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, reaffirming our vow to become enlightened
so as to help all beings. You are welcome to bring fruit, cookies, flowers, candles,
etc. to offer.
Thirty-Five Buddhas Practice
Saturday Jan. 22
7 pm - 9 pm
The confession practice to the Thirty-Five Buddhas is derived from a text called The
Bodhisattva’s Confession of Downfalls. During his lifetime, the great Lama Tsongkhapa
engaged in extensive purification through reciting this sutra and performing 100,000
prostrations to each of the Thirty-Five Buddhas, a total of 31/2 million prostrations.
This practice is extremely important for clearing away past negativities which are the
cause for present and future suffering and obstacles in worldly or spiritual activities.
It is an essential method for both beginners and advanced practitioners.
Tara Puja (Full Moon)
Tuesday Jan. 25
7 pm - 8 pm
Tara embodies all the Buddhas' enlightened actions of body, speech and mind. She is
said to be the liberator, the one who releases from samsara and the causes of samsara.
One special attribute that makes Tara particularly popular is the swiftness with which
she responds to those who invoke her. By depending on Tara, we can clear away hindrances
to all mundane and spiritual success.
Mahakala Puja
Saturday Jan. 29
9 am - 12 pm
Every month according to the lunar calendar, the Gyuto monks perform a Mahakala puja
dedicated to the Center's members, friends and all sentient beings. It is said that
when Avalokiteshvara realized that his peaceful methods did not effectively subdue
all degenerate and suffering beings, he decided that a wrathful form would better
accomplish his compassionate intentions.
Everyone is welcome to attend all Gyuto Center events.
We invite you to visit us.
