Special Gyuto Vajrayana Center Events for January - April 2007

In Praise of Dependent Origination

To prepare students for His Holiness' teaching in April our resident teacher, Khensur Rinpoche Ngawang Jorden, has agreed to give five classes on the text His Holiness will use; Lama Tsong Khapa's, "In Praise of Dependent Origination". This text is considered to be one of the most profound in all Tibetan Buddhism in that it addresses in a systematic and clear way the relationship between emptiness, the ultimate nature of reality, and dependent origination, the philosophical view that things do not exist independently from other factors such as causes and conditions. Lama Tsong Khapa was so inspired by reading and meditating on this teaching of the Buddha that he spontaneously composed this text.

Geshe Thubten Jinpa, His Holiness' translator for the event, has written an English translation for the text at the Gyuto Center's request.

This translation can be found at: http://www.dalailamabay2007.com/ Everyone is welcome to attend these teachings at the Gyuto Center

New Year Members Potluck Party

It is time to celebrate the New Year with our Dharma friends as we look forward to having a prosperous and bright new year. We would like to invite all the members and friends to join the potluck party.

Members' Puja led by the visiting Gyuto Monks' Tantric Choir

The Gyuto Monks' Tantric Choir will tour America in 2007 for first time in six years. There will be fourteen Gyuto monks including the Vice Abbot of Gyuto and they are scheduled to be performing in many major cities and universities. While the Gyuto monks are in San Jose we will take this op! portunit y to organize a puja dedicated to our members, friends and all sentient beings. We welcome everyone to pray together with the monks. Please bring a plate to share.

Special Puja for His Holiness the Dalai Lama

As you all know this year in April we are hosting His Holiness the Dalai Lama and there will be two days of teaching and a public talk in San Francisco. The teaching is the biggest event ever organized by the Gyuto Center and it is honored to be the host of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and we would like to thank all of our members and friends for their encouragement and support. To make His Holiness' visit successful, we would like to invite all of our members and friends to join in a special puja dedicated to His Holiness' visit in April. We will be doing the Mahakala and Dharma King puja led by the visiting Gyuto monks. This is very good opportunity to meet the monks from the Gyuto monastery.

Chasum Puja & Guthuk

As we approach Losar (Tibetan New Year) the Gyuto monks will perform a puja called Chasum which removes the obstacles of the old year. Traditionally, this puja takes place at the end of the year on the 29th of the lunar calendar. During the puja we visualize that all the negativities of body, speech and mind are being removed by our prayers. We then rejoice and dedicate all our prayers for the benefit of all living beings. Everyone is invited to join the puja. Guthuk, the traditional Losar soup, will be served after the puja.

16 Arhats Puja

With this puja we call upon Shakyamuni Buddha and the 16 Arhats to continue to shower their compassion and protection upon sentient beings in Samsara and ask them not to pass into nirvana. We praise the Arhats and pray that they bless our glorious gurus with long lives and ask for their help so that the Dharma may flourish everywhere. Everyone is welcome.

Ongoing Programs

Tibetan Class

Ven. Tanam thinks that the Tibetan class is going very well and all the students are putting a lot of effort to attend the class. Therefore, he would like to continue the class for the benefit of the students. At this point we are not accepting any new students but if the new students know basic Tibetan then they are welcome to join the class but please call Ven. Tanam on 408-9269430 before you join the class. We request $10 donation per class for all students. Thank you.

The Path to Bliss (Lamrim Teaching)

The Lamrim is a special set of instructions that includes all the essential teachings of the Buddha. These instructions are easy to understand and practice, and can readily be applied to solving the problems of one's everyday life. Rinpoche will be giving this teaching every other Thursday night and everyone is welcome. Th! ere are no fees for the teachings but donations are most welcome.

Guru Puja: (Tsog Offering)

This profound invocation ritual and offering to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas is traditionally practiced on the 10th and 25th day of the lunar calendar. It is a commitment for those practicing Highest Yoga Tantra and restores vows and pledges. Everyone is welcome to attend. Members can bring flowers, candles and cookies for offering.

Medicine Buddha Puja for Healing:

The Medicine Buddha practice is extremely powerful and beneficial for the sick and the dying, as well as for those who have already passed away. If you wish to dedicate this puja to your loved ones, please send us their names and photos by mail or email: info@gyutocenter.org so that we can include them. Everyone is welcome.

Tara Puja for Long Life:

Tara embodies all the Buddhas' enlightened actions of body, speech and mind. She is said to be the liberator, the one who has the power to release us from samsara and the causes of samsara. One special attribute that makes Tara particularly popular is the swiftness with which she responds to those who invoke her. Everyone is welcome.

Mahakala Puja for Removing Obstacles:

Every month according to the lunar calendar, the Gyuto monks perform a Mahakala puja dedicated to the Center's members, friends and all sentient beings. Mahakala is the in the wrathful aspect of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Everyone is welcome. Members can bring fruit, cookies, flowers, candles, etc. for the altar.

Ven. Donyo, Director
