PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
SAKA DAWA (The Holy Month of Buddha's Birth)
15 Days of Water Bowl Offerings:
Monday May 29th - June 12th 2006
6.00 pm - 7.00 pm
The Buddhist holy month of Saka Dawa is the best time to accumulate millions of merits within a very short period of time. Therefore we will be offering thousands of water bowls and candle lights to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. We will be doing this practice everyday for fifteen days at 6 pm and all members are invited to join these offerings. It is taught that the merit of any activity done at this time is multiply hundreds and thousands of times, so the community is encouraged to practice Dharma as much as we can in this holy month. Participants can bring filtered pure water, candles, fresh flowers and fruits for offerings.
8 Eight Mahayana Precepts:
Sunday June 11th 2006
5.30 am – 6:00 am
The month of Saka Dawa is the time of Lord Buddha's enlightenment, the anniversary of his passing into Maha Parinirvana and the commemoration of his birth. The full moon of Saka Dawa is the most important day according to the lunar calendar. It is the day that all the positive deeds will multiply hundreds and thousands of times. On this day Buddha Shakyamuni himself prayed for all sentient beings to achieve enlightenment. Therefore, if we practice Dharma or make positive effort on this day for the benefit of others we will accumulate millions of merits within a single day. Therefore, we begin with taking the 8 Mahayana precepts before sunrise (5:30 am). The 8 precepts are: refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, taking all intoxicants, eating no more than one meal a day, not sitting on a high seat with pride or wearing jewelry, perfume or makeup. Keeping the 8 Mahayana precepts for one day protects our mind from disturbing negative thoughts and becomes a contribution to peace for all sentient beings. Everyone is welcome to take the 8 Mahayana precepts and keep the vows for 24 hours. No prerequisites are required.
Vajrasattva Practice:
The Vajrasattva practice is the most powerful purification practice in daily life. Vajrasattva is the deity that embodies the purification powers of all the Buddhas. If one practices sincerely with the correct motivation, all the negativities we have accumulated in this life and previous lives can be removed. We will be reciting and chanting the Vajrasattva mantra. Everyone is welcome to join the practice; please bring your mala. A vegetarian lunch will be provided and we request $30.00 donation per person for hosting the retreat.
